Consistency Will Get You There

The Key to Diet & Fitness Success is Consistency

Although following a sensible diet and exercise routine is essential in losing weight, keeping fit and staying healthy, they do not dictate your end result nor should they be your only focus. In fact, the best way to achieve the results you desire is by applying consistency in all areas that require your attention.

Ultimately, no matter what diet or fitness regime you choose, maintaining consistency throughout your chosen program will be the deciding factor in your success. Fad diets, magic pills or trendy exercise machines will not deliver any results unless you've disciplined yourself with consistent habits. Jump start your diet and fitness plan with the following tips and learn how to stay focused, be consistent and reap the benefits.

Set Yourself Up For Success With Short and Long Term Goals

Although consistency plays a crucial role in health management, motivation is the fuel that keeps you burning and motivation is determined by your goals. Usually, long term goals are more effective than short term goals, ironically, most people concentrate on the latter.

A short term goal can be compared to a superficial purpose such as losing 10 lbs before your best friend's wedding or attaining six pack abs before your next beach vacation. Although these goals can be achieved quickly, it is unlikely to have any staying power. Once the wedding or vacation is over, the motivation level reduces drastically and once again you are faced with the same obstacle that prompted you to take action in the first place.

Long term goals, on the other hand, become deep-seated. In fact, doing something consistently over a long period of time becomes habit, and once that habit is well established, it becomes constitutional. These goals can include maintaining proper sugar levels to keep your diabetic condition in line or reducing your cholesterol count and keeping it down. Perhaps your goal is to lower your body fat percentage and staying within your healthy range. These types of goals will help you stay focused and develop good habits for the long haul.

Of course, that's not to say that short term goals offer no value. They can indeed be a part of your plan and are a fantastic way to rev up your motivation. Do celebrate your small victories while pushing towards your long term goal.

Find A Diet and Exercise Plan That Will Suit Your Needs

Increase your chances of success by consistently following a realistic meal plan. Don't set yourself up for failure by choosing a diet that will leave you feeling ill or uncomfortable. Investigate your past attempts and adjust your new regime accordingly. Follow a diet that you feel good about and can be incorporated into your current lifestyle without compromising your target goals.

If for example, a low carb diet left you feeling sick and tired all the time, then opt for something else. A moderate carbohydrate approach can be just as effective as long as you don't go over your allotted daily caloric intake. The best regime is one that offers all the essential nutrients in balanced proportions.

The same strategy applies to your fitness program of choice. Don't set yourself up to work out 7 days a week doing all kinds of exercises if you are not physically capable of doing so. Choose a routine based on your capabilities and makes you feel good and do it consistently. If walking is something you can do everyday without physical constraints such as injuries or any other ill condition, then do it and keep doing it. The idea is to pick something and stick with it. Again, the key ingredient is consistency.

Please keep in mind that maintaining a level of consistency does take practice. There may be days when you over eat or miss a walk, however, keep at it and it will become second nature. You cannot, under any circumstances, undermine all your efforts because of a slip here and there. Evaluate why it happened, adjust and move on. This is not a race to the finish line, but rather a way to train your mind and body to a new way of living.

Identify and Address Potential Issues Early

Being consistent isn't always easy, but it can be done. It's important to monitor your progress and identify any problems before they sabotage any or all of your efforts. The sooner you identify these issues, the quicker you can re-adjust your program and get back on track.

If a two mile run everyday is causing you excessive fatigue after two weeks or you keep over spending your daily caloric limit because of emotional triggers, then a visit to your local physician, councilor or fitness expert may be warranted for some advice on how to best handle the situations. If health or emotional issues are not dealt with early on, you're motivation levels will start to decline and consistency will no longer be practiced. It's better to adjust as you go and stay on target.

Adjust Your Program Accordingly

Above, we talked about identifying possible issues that may impede your progress, however, you should also pay attention to see if indeed your program is working effectively. If your fitness levels are not improving, then you need to adjust your workout so that it pushes you slightly more than in the previous weeks. If you do see good results, again you need to re-adjust and push harder in the next few weeks.

As the months go by, you will be amazed at what was once very difficult to do, is now a walk in the park. Remember, adjust your program as you go. You may even need to re-invent your entire plan every so often to keep it updated. Keep in mind that goals can, and do change over time, but consistency always remains the same.

Add Variety To Your Routine and Have Fun

The last tip for your consideration is to try and have fun while on your way to a healthier you. You could substitute one of your usual daily workouts for a hike up the mountain or try your hand at rock climbing. How about joining a sports team like volleyball or baseball once a week. Being fit is about being active. As long as you stay consistent about your activity level, you can change things around to make it fun, fresh and interesting.

Keep It Real and Be Consistent

Rather than bombarding your precious time with the logistics behind every diet or vigorous workout routine such as counting calories or keeping track of reps, make sure that you first understand the importance of consistency. Finding a diet or exercise plan is easy. Following through with discipline is obviously more difficult but will inevitably result in bigger rewards. Remember, it's not your choice of program that dictates your end result but rather your commitment in accommodating it on a regular basis. Keep it real and be consistent.

Great article, you know that is exactly why a lot people fail - superficial goals, Every year I kick butt with my workouts and diet till Christmas cause I want to look my best, but when it's over, I go back to my bad habits and regain 10 lbs. Consistency really is fundamental in every aspect of your life.

I enjoyed your article because it is very realistic. There are times I just don't feel like going to the gym because I would rather go home and relax, but then I think about how I would feel after the time had passed that I usually work out and the answer was awful. Even if I drag into the gym, by time I get warmed up, I feel pretty great and sometimes have a better work out than other days when I am all ready for the gym. I am learning to do different things in my hometown that would be fun for excercising. But the most important word is consistent. I consistently workout five days a week. I would not set an unrealistic work like seven days a week. What I do is be active with house chores or washing the car on those down days. I love it, keep sending the positive energy this way.
